The first day of spring is just around the corner, and for many people that means it’s time to do a deep cleaning of their homes. Even if you’ve never done a spring cleaning, it might be a good idea to consider it this year.
What is spring cleaning?
An annual deep clean of the home is a tradition in many cultures, and when done in the spring it helps to clean out the dust and stuffiness from a closed up house all winter. It started when homes were heated with fireplaces and the leftover ash needed to be removed.
What to clean
Wipe down the inside and outside of your windows. This will help you see out more clearly, as all the spots and smudges will be removed instead of just some of them.
Wash the bedding. This includes all the pillows and comforters or blankets, because dust can have built up in them over the past year since they were last washed.
Wipe down all counters and cabinets. This include the kitchen and bathroom — and anywhere else you have cabinets or countertops. This helps to clean up any leftover spills and get rid of any remaining winter cold or flu germs. Be sure to wipe up spills when they happen so your spring cleaning can be quicker!
Clean out the refrigerator and pantry. Go through and get rid of all the expired foods, and sanitize shelves and drawers before you put everything back in its place. You may be surprised by finding a favorite snack in the back of the pantry you’d forgotten about buying.
Wash the appliances, like your washing machine and dishwasher. Keeping them clean and sanitized will help them run more efficiently and clean what they are intended to do.
3 tips to spring clean your home
- Clean room by room, so you’re sure not to miss anything. It’s more effective than randomly going back and forth across the house. You can also utilize checklists for each room to make sure you hit everything you want to do.
- Don’t do it alone. Grab your family, including the kids! Everyone can help out with organizing, picking up clutter and even wiping down surfaces for dust, spills and smudges. It’s a great family bonding experience because everyone is working together to accomplish a goal without any technological distractions.
- You don’t need a lot. Don’t go out and buy the entire cleaning aisle from the store. Stick to a few products, like an all-purpose cleaner of your choice and some microfiber cloths.
