It can be hard to fully rest and relax, even when you have the time to do so. With thoughts of work, chores, kids’ activities and future plans swarming around in your head, it can be hard to shut off all the thoughts of your normal busy, stressful life and enjoy your rest and relaxation. But don’t forget – you’ve earned it! You work hard and deserve some time to unwind, even if it’s not as often as you’d like.
Why rest and relaxation are important
For your mental health and your physical health, it’s important to make sure you are getting enough rest and relaxation. That means more than just getting some sleep though! While sleep is important for your energy restoration and muscle repair, it can also be important for headaches, depression and that completely stressed out or even burned out feeling you get. Rest and relaxation can help reduce pain and anxiety while having beneficial impacts on your heart and lung health. Whether you are taking your R&R time away from home on a long awaited vacation or are simply relaxing at home, here are some tips to get the most of your time off.
3 tips to rest and relax better
Don’t overschedule yourself. Even if you’re taking a day off and staying at home, it’s important to not fully schedule out your day. While brunch with one friend, a manicure or pedicure, yoga class, an hour at the gym, afternoon coffee with another friend and dinner with your significant other may sound fun, it’s a full day where you may not get the full benefits of taking time off. Pick one or two activities per day (whether you’re at home or away) and then leave some time to just sit back and relax.
Turn off your phone. Maybe not literally – you still want loved ones to be able to connect if they need to. But at least turn off your work email on your phone once you’ve set your out of office responder. By turning off the notifications, you won’t be as tempted to reach for the phone and take care of business when you’re relaxing.
Try something new. Maybe it’s meditation or snorkeling or mountain climbing. Trying something new, whether it’s active or not, is a great way to focus on the moment and truly experience your time away from the everyday life. It may even help you get deeper rest if it tires you out!
